Online Education Is it the New Norm for Engineering Education
verbunden Education Is it the New Norm for Engineering Education Online Education Is it the New Norm for Engineering Education Online Education Is it the New Norm for Engineering Education?by ASME Strategic Issues CommitteeYale University offers 42 free courses. Stanford University opens new platforms to experiment and expand in erreichbar education. Stanford also collaborates with the Khan Academy (free online tutorials for K-12, for example) to offer education at more levels.Online education (OE) is storming into the educational system. With 10% growth in online enrollments in the US compared with 2% growth in the overall higher education student population, its a huge opportunity for educational entrepreneurs to operate independently of the institutional educational system. (Babson Survey and College Board data, 2011) Engineering educators pioneered in early forms of virtual and online education, so they are invested in its future.Todays leap forward is the MOOC, the Massive Open Online Course, which is a course offered free and worldwide on the Internet to anyone who wants to sign up for it. Harvard, MIT, and Stanford Universities are among the top-tier institutions offering MOOCs.Much of free online learning today developed with philanthropic support. There are for-profit companies, such as Udemy, and collaborative projects like Coursera (33 universities involved, and 1.6 million students) and Udacity. Some universities make money from students enrolled in the online versions of their degree courses. Six million students in higher education took at least 1 online course in 2010. (Babson Survey and The College Board data, 2011) Arizona State University has 10,000 recorded engineering lectures. Harvard, MIT, and UC Berkeley are offering online courses with proctored exams. Stanfords new internal MOOC Class2Go, is an internal platform, designed to be an open space for online learning and research, and is a strategic move to study how Stanford can best deliver online education in the long run.Key Points to RememberOnline education is likely a large future component of all education locally and globallyEnsuring its quality will demand new systems, watchdogsOpportunity for collaboration across systems, and among nontraditional education partners, will open upGlobally, OE promises to make top-tier information and education available to students who previously had no access. However, that access remains uneven. Only 1 in 3 people use the Web globally, less than 1 in 6 in Africa. It also can be unpopular with students, for example, in Korea, where Korean students prefer attending a university in person. For some US undergraduates OE represents an unwelcome inverted model of education in which they watch lectures at home and engage in group work with faculty and other students in face to face class time. The next generation of digital native students is more likely to accept the inverted model as their normal. Students may see OE as less valuab le because it is online. They will expect cheaper or free offerings. Both those factors could affect revenue generation. Some educational Institutions, which have a significant amount of social and regulatory drag, not to mention sunk investment, may develop new hybrid models to be able to slow OEs impact on their traditional models. On the other hand, the new tools could overturn almost every belief and practice of higher education. Today, universities are still in the substitution phase of the technology. Can OE do the job cheaper, faster, with lower overhead? In this stage, it is reasonable to expect fear and resistance as jobs and expectations change. In the next stage, OE stakeholders will discover new approaches to education that are not based on todays university models. In the long term, everything about higher education will be up for digital transformation. Universities may become more purely research institutions, with education of undergraduates outsourced. If this happen s, student engineers could find themselves between different learning camps.A recent report by Bain hints that OE is an inevitable choice by mid- to lower-ranked universities that are financially overextended. (Bain report, pdf) Top-ranked universities have other motivations for OE and MOOCs, building their educational brand worldwide, for example. Two things to think about expect a big sorting out of quality and value in the next few years. It is important to update OE awareness and knowledge frequentlyby taking an OE course, for example. The next generation of engineering students, brought up on sites like the Khan Academy in K-12, will expect to use OEhow can engineering education be adapted now to meet their future expectations?Implications for ASMEPublishing will be affecteddigital technical textbooks offered at one price that includes future updates. (Digital book future) This changes expectations for post degree publications. Should ASME develop new digital book models?Drop-out rates, particularly for MOOCs, are currently high, and may limit the ability of OE to develop qualified new engineers. Could ASME develop better means of self-selection and qualification of OE for engineers and engineering students?Exploring the emerging economic models for who pays for online engineering education (OEE) could reveal options for new sponsorship and revenue to ASMEIn emerging payment models, universities may charge for testing and certification, not the course. Non-university OE providers might supply what teaching assistants do in traditional models, group work, evaluation, etc. Could this bring new opportunities for ASME?Advertising, job seeking, employers seeking qualified people, etc., are all potential revenue sources in OE. Can ASME benefit from any of these sources? ASME could be part of Hastac, a network of people who study new forms of learning for the digital age.Your FeedbackWhat are your thought on this topic? Glow star Alison Brie on why women need to own their success
Glow star Alison Brie on why women need to own their successGlow star Alison Brie on why women need to own their successIts hard to believe Alison Brie would have trouble owning zu sich success. After all, she welches on two seminal shows (Mad Men and Community) during the same time period, has had a stellar film career with roles in Sleeping With Other People, The Lego Movie and The Post, and now stars on the hit Netflix series Glow which just got renewed for a third season. However, she points out, that all women, no matter what industry they are in tend to apologize for their success.Ladders sat down with the actress recently at an event celebrating the re-launch ofAmerican Express Gold Card to discuss her career and women in Hollywood. On embracing your successBrie recently worked with Meryl Streep and Steven Spielberg on last years Oscar-nominated The Post. She described the job as surreal but also realized she deserved to be there. It was totally surreal and amazing but at the sa me time, we all need to remind ourselves that we do deserve that. You are at that place because you worked hard to get there. Luck obviously has something to do with it, but so does determination. Certainly, the challenge of that job was to be cool, stay in character, etc., The first take of every scene was Oh my God, Oh my God, its Meryl Streep, and then by the second take it was like remember youre playing a character. Its your mom. And at a certain point you go, I deserve to be here and I think that speaks to women in all industries.Much mora so than men, weve been made to feel like we always have to apologize for our success, even amongst other women and really about anything. You look beautiful Oh do I? I dont know. We downplay our success and I think we shouldnt We should really take ownership in those things. There are moments when we dont have success so you need to embrace your power when you have it.On fighting for her jobThe showrunners for Glow, a series about womens wre stling in the 1980s, famously did not want Brie for the lead role of Ruth. This made Brie want it even mora. When I read the role it hit me gutturally. I really responded to the material and it kind of was the perfect process for me and me becoming this character. Ruths whole struggle is feeling underestimated and feeling that she has to prove to people that she is capable of more. And that was my process when I read the role.As an actress, I had more that I wanted to showcase. I was really looking to do something different that felt unexpected for me. So when I heard that they didnt think I was right for the role thats how I knew this was the right role to pursue. It made me feel like that is exactly what Im looking for. And the longer the audition process went on the more I literally morphed into Ruth at every new audition. Her desperation was coming through me and that gumption that Ive always had especially when it comes to my acting career. And just that wanton desire to prove yo urself. My showrunners said when they first mentioned you for the part we couldnt see it all and by the end, we couldnt unsee you.On the state of women in HollywoodI think it is a good time to be a woman in Hollywood because never before have we had such a strong community and felt such a closeness and a banding together as a sex to change the industry in a lot of ways. It does feel like we are on the brink of a lot of change I hope. Certainly more than ever people are writing great roles for women. Glow is such a testament to that and the work that Jenji Cohen the Emmy-nominated creator of Glow, Weeds, and Orange is the New Black has always been about showcasing all different types of women. To look at our cast and the cast of Orange is the New Black, and just the volume of women is incredible. Its also a good time for women because people are grasping the value of female executives, and female creators, and women at the top. Womens stories arent only for women, they are for everyon e and I think you are starting to see the trickle of that in the industry. On learning from the bestBrie talked about working with the legendary Streep.I was just trying to pillage her secrets and it was so difficult because there is an effortlessness to the way that she works. You can only imagine it is from years of practice. Certainly her presence on set and in character. She never did the same take twice. She always seemed to be so in the moment. She was very unafraid in trying different things.Sometimes as an actor you want to plan out how you do everything and with her, there was not the slightest bit of that. You looked into her eyes and you feel like she was living right then in that moment.

How to Cope With a Demotion at Work
How to Cope With a Demotion at WorkHow to Cope With a Demotion at WorkYou thought you were doing fine, even moving up the ladder at your company, and then you got called into your bosss office. A promotion or a raise, you thought - or, with a wave of panic, could it be a termination? No, the reason for the meeting was that you were getting demoted. What? A demotion is defined as a reduction in work level. Its the downgrading of your job title, rank or status, with terms like reorganization or reassignment. Its not uncommon in the workplace. A new OfficeTeam survey shows nearly half (46 percent) of HR managers said their companies have demoted employees. The reasons for a demotion at workWhy would someone get demoted? It could be the result of something they did or didnt do, or it could be beyond their control. Here are the reasons cited in the surveyPoor performanceA recent promotion that wasnt working outElimination of the position or organizational restructuringEmployees request to take a lower roleWhat to do if you get demotedAn involuntary demotion can be a blow to your ego, your career and your bank account. It could be a wake-up call that your skills arent up to par or simply a result of your company downsizing or undergoing a merger.Your first inclination may be to turn in your resignation letter and start looking for another job. But thats not necessarily your best move. Following are five steps to take after a demotion at work.1. Assess what happenedThe first thing is to find out why your company is taking this action and to calmly reflect on it. welches it a disciplinary action? A performance-related issue? The elimination of your position? You might ask questions such as theseCan I have a little more time in the position to improve? Can you describe my new role? Can you outline the transition plan? What if I dont want to take the position youre offering? How will the demotion be communicated?2. Be open to feedbackConsider the possibility that your manager considers you a valuable employee and wants you to be successful in a role that better suits your current skills. Ask if there are concerns about your performance or attitude or if there are ways you can improve your job skills. Listen for helpful suggestions, and dont discount the possibility of a better offer opening up later at your company, in the same department or another one.3. Reach out to your support systemDont underestimate the toll a demotion can take on your emotions. You might feel rejected or unappreciated, and you may need to seek support from friends, family, or even mentors and counselors outside the workplace.can help you stay up to date on the latest job market trends, find opportunities and dodge obstacles in your professional path.SEARCH JOBS4. Create an action planFind a way to frame the demotion as an opportunity to strengthen your skills or performance and strategize where you want to go with your career. Focus on identifying specific steps you can take to regain your confidence. Seek opportunities to invest in yourself with professional development training. If you decide to stay in the lower-level job, consider how you can do your very best.5. Figure out whether to stay or leaveIf you decide to explore the employment waters and plan for your departure, youll need to update your resume, initiate networking activities, ask for referrals, research companies and start your job search. This may be an ideal time to work with a staffing agency to make connections with employers.

Sample Open Door Policy for the Workplace
Sample Open Door Policy for the WorkplaceSample Open Door Policy for the WorkplaceThe following is a sample open door policy for your workplace. It is recommended that forward-thinking workplaces adopt an open door policy to promote positive communication with employees. When every employee understands that he or she can visit with any manager or senior level employee and talk with them about any topic chosen, you have an open door environment. Introducing and Enforcing an Open Door Policy The policy should appear in your employee handbook and should stress the components employees need to understand about how to pursue their options in an open door environment. Provide training to all managers and employees about what an open door policy is and how you can use it most effectively in your workplace. If your managers are reinforcing the intents and purposes for which you established your open door policy, employees are more likely to take advantage of the opportunity to communicat e up and down your organizational hierarchy. There are right ways and wrong ways to seek an open door conversation and all employees need to understand the process. Used effectively, every employee has access to every other employee no matter their level or job title. Sample Open Door Policy Please feel free to use this open enrollment sample policy as a starting point when you decide to adopt the practice in your workplace. Understand that the first step is to make certain that you have the commitment of your senior leaders and managers. Your employees are easily led down paths that cause distrust. Make sure that you mean what you say when you publish an open door policy for your employees. They will never trust you in the future if they see your failure to walk your talk. Introduction to the Open Door Policy Your company has adopted an Open Door Policy for all employees. This means, literally, that every managers door is open to every employee. The purpose of our open door pol icy is to encourage open communication, feedback, and discussion about any matter of importance to an employee. Our open door policy means that employees are free to talk with any manager at any time about any topic. Responsibilities Under an Open Door Policy If any area of your work is causing you concern, you have the responsibility to address your concern with a manager. Whether you have a problem, a complaint, a suggestion, or an observation, your company managers want to hear from you. By listening to you, the company is able to improve, to address complaints, and to foster employee understanding of the rationale for practices, processes, and decisions. Before You Pursue the Open Door Policy Most problems can and should be solved in discussion with your immediate supervisor this is encouraged as your first effort to solve a problem. But, an open door policy means that you may also discuss your issues and concerns with the next levels of management and/or Human Resources staff m embers. No matter how you approach your problem, complaint, or suggestion, you will find managers at all levels of the organization willing to listen and to help bring about a solution or a clarification. Benefits of the Open Door Policy By helping to solve problems, managers benefit by gaining valuable insight into possible problems with existing methods, procedures, and approaches. While there may not be an easy answer or solution to every concern, your companys employees have the opportunity at all times, through the open door policy, to be heard. No Retaliation The open door policy includes the assurances that an individual employee who pursues his or her rights to talk to any level of management will experience no retaliation or interference from the employees immediate manager. The manager should be included as needed.

Choose Who You Want to Be Isaac Lidsky Talks About His New Book, #8216;Eyes Wide Open#8217;
Choose Who You Want to Be Isaac Lidsky Talks About His New Book, 8216Eyes Wide Open8217 You could choose to read Isaac Lidskys new book,Eyes Wide Open Overcoming Obstacles and Recognizing Opportunities in a World That Cant See Clearly, as the story of one mans experience with blindness, but youd be doing yurself a disservice.Youd also be directly contradicting the express intentions of the author. One thing I really try to emphasize is that this book is really elend about me, its not about blindness, and its not about disability, Lidsky says. I would not have written the book for any of those reasons.Instead, what the book is about is Lidskys eyes wide open philosophy on life.It happens that the way I gained this eyes wide open vision welches by the bizarre process of losing my sight, but the vision is for everyone, Lidsky says. The story of Lidskys blindness is not the core ofEyes Wide Openrather, at the books heart sits Lidskys believe that in every m oment, we choose who we want to be and how we want to live our lives. Whether we realize it or not, whether we like it or not, whether we want to admit it or not, that is our ultimate power and our responsibility.About a month ago, I had the opportunity to hop on the phone with Lidsky for a quick chat aboutEyes Wide Open. What follows is a transcript of our conversation, minimally edited for style and clarity.Recruiter.comI want to start with the title particularly, the subtitle Overcoming Obstacles and Recognizing Opportunities in a World That Cant See Clearly. Can you elaborate a little on what, exactly, a world that cant see clearly means in this context?Isaac LidskySo much of our lives the way we experience the world around us is really within our control. We confront circumstances beyond our control, but how they manifest themselves in our lives is entirely within our control. But it doesnt often feel that way, and too often, we experience our fears as objective truths, our se lf-limiting functions as truths. We misconceive our strengths and weaknesses. We misconceive success and value in our lives. The way in which I lost my sight, I sort of saw firsthand the role that we play in shaping the reality we experience. If were not careful, not aware, we see it as beyond our control. Thats what I mean by a world that cant see clearly.RCThis leads to another proposition in the book, which is the importance of tackling your challenges with eyes wide open. So, in contrast to a world that cant see clearly, what does it mean to see with your eyes wide open?ILLiving and leading eyes wide open is about understanding, recognizing, and embracing your role, your ability, your power, and your responsibility to create the life you want for yourself. Its about being brutally honest and transparent with yourself about whats important to you, what success looks like to you, what value looks like, how you want to spend your time, and who you want to be as a person, and its abo ut holding yourself accountable for those choices.RCDo you have any examples that could illustrate what this looks like in practice? Maybe from your own life, or the book, or just general experience?ILIn chapter six of the book, I talk about how I was fortunate to have a really awesome legal career going. I had graduated with honors from Harvard Law School and had a few amazing jobs in the public sector, like clerking for two Supreme Court justices. I really enjoyed all of that, and then I eventually took the obvious path to a fancy law firm job with a big signing bonus and all that. While thats a great path for a lot of folks, it wasnt for me. I was pretty miserable. So I put my money where my mouth is with this whole eyes wide open philosophy. I dug deep and figured out what it was I didnt like about my career and what was important to me what I wanted to do. The upshot was I essentially abandoned my legal career and moved my family from Manhattan to Orlando, Florida, where with m y college roommate I bought a small, humble residential construction subcontractor.RCAnother really interesting idea in the book is the thin, elusive line between acceptance and surrender. Could you say a little more about that?ILAcceptance is critical. We should accept and embrace who we are as people, our different talents, attributes, and capabilities. But its a tricky thing because too often were too quick to tell ourselves what we can and cannot do.Ill give you an example from the book My wife conceived triplets, and leading up to their birth, I was doubly challenged as both a male and blind. I could have gotten away with not doing diapers and bottles. My wife would have let me off the hook and it was tempting to be like, Hey, its kind of a bad idea. I think I should skip out on diapers. But that would have been surrendering to my blindness or some notion of my blindness as a limitation. In the short term, it would have gotten me out of diaper duty, but in the long run, it woul d have done real damage to my conception of myself. Instead, I looked at it and said, Its not going to be much more difficult for me than it would for anyone to manage diapers and bottles with triplets. It would be hard for anyone, and maybe it will be a little more complex for me, but there are so many solutions and techniques and ways for me to do it.I needed to know if I was saying, I know I am capable, and I can do it if need be, but I am choosing not to or it I was saying, I cant do it.Ultimately, I knew that I could do it, and I knew that I couldnt justify the choice not to, because being an involved parent and helping my wife was something I thought was important to do. There was really no escaping the conclusion. So, Ive changed a lot of diapers in my day.Acceptance is often a lot harder than surrender.

Mini-Sensor Detects and Measures What We Eat Part 2
Mini-Sensor Detects and Measures What We Eat Part 2 Mini-Sensor Detects and Measures What We Eat Part 2 Mini Sensor Detects and Measures What We Eat, Part 2Part 1 of Mini Sensor Detects and Measures What We Eat introduced you to the work of Fiorenzo Omenetto. Part 2 explores how he and his team built the device and the changes future versions of it will undergo. These are not the first devices developed to measure food intake, but others have had various limitations intricate microphones, accelerometers, and electromyography to monitor chewing movements awkward mouth guards, bulky wiring, and systems requiring frequent sensor replacement. Using ambient radio waves prevalent in modern day environments eliminates the need for a power supply. In theory we can modify the bioresponsive layer in these sensors to target other chemicals we are really limited only by ur creativity. Dean Fiorenzo Omenetto, Tufts University The sensors three layers act like a tiny antenna that send s information to receivers, like this one worn by the ear. Image SilkLab, Tufts UniversityThe work on this device evolved out of work on implantable devices Omenettos lab has been working on for years. This was one of the many evolutions, platforms, and materials we designed, Omenetto says. Its been a long journey. The initial work on this device used a single larger layer that operated on a single frequency. We progressively went smaller and to a multi-layered device because of functionality, he explains. For You Engineers Help Fight Opioid Addiction The biggest challenges have been those that are endemic to the material formats and interfaces, he says. Its never easy to interface something that has to operate in a wet environment. So there were a lot of challenges in designing the material, assembling the material, and having active layers of the materials. Its always about material format and how to make materials versatile and useful. While pleased with reaching the milestone descr ibed in the article, he totenstill considers the sensing fairly primitive and requiring more work. The format opens the door to making the sensors more sophisticated to build more sensitivity and specificity. This is just one step along the way of making something that can be of physiological utility, he says. When asked when it will be ready to go, he responds, What for? To measure what? If you want the sensor to communicate and store every minute the exact number of calories youve consumed, its going to take a long while. If you want a coarse measurement of whether you have high pH or low pH in the mouth, then you need to find a partner to commercialize it. That can happen fairly quickly. These things depend on so many intangibles and depend on what you want to do with it.From a scientific standpoint, the goal is to build greater sensitivity and specificity for certain markers of health that can be detected in the oral cavity. To do so, the team plans to continue to refine the mate rial format and to work with variables that can provide physiological indicators for answering certain medical questions. In theory we can modify the bioresponsive layer in these sensors to target other chemicals we are really limited only by our creativity, Omenetto says. How being a perfectionist really is your biggest weakness
How being a perfectionist really is your biggest weaknessHow being a perfectionist really is your biggest weaknessWhether youve been through a series of interviews, or youve spent a considerable amount of time preparing for one, you know the dreaded question - Whats your greatest weakness? And, if youre familiar with that inquiry, you also know one of the most common responses - Im a perfectionist. Many people go with this response because it appears to give them the ability to spin a negative into a positive. After all, perfectionists work hard to make everything, well, perfect. However, this response only scratches the surface of a real answer. If we dig a little deeper, it becomes clear perfectionism is a weakness if youre truly obsessed with every detail of everything you do.So, lets dig in - here are four ways perfectionism works against you in the office, and one big way to make it work for you.1. Youre hard to work withLets get the biggest negative out of the way first. Some times, perfectionists build a bad reputation for themselves at the office because, well, nothings ever good enough. Whether youre a team leader who sends a task back for tweaks multiple times, or youre a staffer who cant turn something in until youve examined it repeatedly, your co-workers might lose their appreciation for your hard work after a while. To break this habit, you should learn how to delegate - no matter how hard it is for you to do it at first. Itll make you more productive and a better colleague if you master the practice. And then, you can point to this lesson in your next interview, admitting perfectionism is a weakness, but explaining how working on it has made you a better employee all around.2. You dont go for itPerfectionism and insecurity go together like peanut butter and jelly. In other words, youre so concerned about getting it right 100 percent of the time that youre afraid to fail. That causes you to take a backseat in your career, and perhaps in other asp ects of life, too, because its safer to stick with what you know.No matter how good you are at your job, though, you wont get far without taking on new tasks and risks. departure by taking steps to overcome your insecurity - accepting the fact that everyone fails sometimes is a big part of it. It will help you let go of your perfectionism, too, if you admit its normal to make missteps along the way.3. You focus on the wrong thingsAnother con to perfectionism is that you focus on all the wrong details. Think about your last big project - you probably mulled over the meat of it for quite some time, but how many hours did you spend tweaking fonts, designing slides, changing the colors of bar graphs, etc.?These tiny tasks are just begging you to let your perfectionist side out, but theyre a time suck that draws you away from bigger to-dos. Spending all those hours on the details undoubtedly pulled you away from another project or presentation that deserved more of an effort than you c ould give it in the long run.4. You never celebrate youFocusing on every detail is tiring, but you also cant stop. As soon as you finish one project - and, lets face it, its hard for a perfectionist to live up to their own specifications and consider something done - youre onto the next. That task gets the same detailed treatment, too, until a deadline forces you to complete it. From there, the cycle continues. If youre always go, go, going with projects in this way, you never have time to reflect on the things you could have done differently. This type of reflection can actually enhance your workplace performance, which is great nachrichtensendung for perfectionists. But without time to breathe between projects, youll never have a moment to think back and improve.Plus, you also deserve a pat on the back from time to time, and the end of a big project or presentation is the perfect time to celebrate you. It might be a challenge as a self-proclaimed perfectionist, but giving yoursel f credit for the hard work you do is a well-deserved part of the process that will make you feel even better about the time and effort you put into whatever task youve just finished. You can make it work, thoughFortunately, theres good news in all of this - perfectionism doesnt have to be all bad. Its all about loosening the reins, delegating or otherwise taking a step back. A more relaxed approach will make things better for your state of mind and the states of mind of everyone with whom you work.Plus, your new outlook will help you in your next interview, too. You know your biggest weakness is perfectionism but you can avoid the clich and point to what, specifically, is holding you back and share all the steps youre taking to make it better. Ultimately, though, your attention to detail shows you care, and the right amount will impress any employer. Most importantly, though, the happy balance you strike will make you feel better about yourself both professionally and personally, w hich will further spur your success. This article first appeared on Punched Clocks.

Learn How Focus Groups Are Used in Advertising
Learn How Focus Groups Are Used in Advertising Learn How Focus Groups Are Used in Advertising In marketing, advertising, product design, the film industry, and many other professions, a focus group is often used to test the possible effectiveness of a product or campaign. What a Focus Group Is Basically, its a group of people, from different backgrounds, assembled to participate in a moderated discussion about a particular product, service or advertising campaign. It will either be used to gain insights before work has started, or used to judge and guide the work being done. Often despised by the creative department, and loved by the clients, the focus group is often seen as a way to justify the expense of an upcoming advertising campaign by getting actual consumer feedback before it launches. However, this research is often best taken with a huge grain of salt. As you will discover, it can give credence to something that will actually fail once it hits the market, or stop something in its tracks that was actually destined to be a huge hit. The Types of Focus Groups There are many types of focus groups these days, especially since technology has advanced to allow remote access teleconferencing. However, the major types of focus groups are still very similar to those that were being used in the 1960s. They are: Moderated groups: As the name suggests, a trained moderator controls the focus group. Most focus groups are done this way.Unmoderated groups: Highly discouraged, the client or agency can simply put a product or service in front of potential consumers, and take notes from behind a two-way mirror. In these cases, a respondent often steps up and becomes a proxy moderator.Client-based focus groups: The client participates in the focus group, either openly or undercover, to get feedback first had.Opposing moderators: In this scenario, two trained moderators participate, each taking a different view of the product or service being discussed. New technology methods now include: Remote teleconferencing: An audio or video network is used to create a focus group connecting clients, agency staff and respondents across the country, or even the world.Online focus groups: One of the most cost-effective new methods, a virtual group is created using the Internet. An online moderator controls the group interaction. The Advantages of Focus Groups When doing initial research for a product or service, focus groups can be invaluable. Although the information is subjective, it can assist in product development, new service improvements and avenues for advertising agencies to explore. By learning as much as possible about what the consumers think of a product or service, you are gaining valuable insights that can help ad agencies develop strong campaigns. The Drawbacks of Focus Groups The main drawback is the one in a million outcome of the groups. No two focus groups are alike, comprising different people of differing backgrounds and ages. But even if focus groups used the same people every time, attitudes to products and services can change overnight. How people feel, what is going on in their lives, and many other factors can affect the outcome. So its never consistent. The easy to please factor should also be considered. Many people find it difficult to be brutally honest, and will often just give moderators the answers they think they should be giving. Cherry-picking respondents who are biased towards the product or service can exacerbate this. And of course, one of the biggest problems of focus groups is trying to please all the people, all the time. If ad campaigns do not offend anyone in the room, or even cause a fiery discussion, then they are considered good. But thats counter to what advertising is supposed to do. Creative, disruptive advertising is designed to catch the attention, and will never please everyone. This type of advertising will rarely come through a focus group unscathed. As Henry Ford once famously said, If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.â Knowing this, you really have to be careful with a focus group. One way or another, It could cost you a lot of money.

How to deal with your significant other losing their job
How to deal with your significant other losing their job How to deal with your significant other losing their job When my husband lost his supposedly stable job (just a casual two months before our wedding), we went through one of the roughest patches of our relationship - most of it being my fault.I still remember him calling to say the job was done. It was minutes after learning I needed extensive dental work ⦠and I was on his insurance. Cue the sweat, anxiety, questions, and lots and lots of tears. How will we pay for the remainder of the wedding? Will he ever get a job again? Where will we live? Will I need to pick up another job? Will my teeth fall out if I donât get this dentist work done?!Spoiler alert: He got a job two months later, we still got married, we never became homeless, and I still have my teeth. But letâs just say I learned a few things throughout the process, and if I had to go through it again, Iâd do things VERY differently. If youâre currently going through it (sending a hug and a big glass of vino), or do in your future, act better than I did. Hereâs how.Be su pportiveIf thereâs any time to put yourself in someone elseâs shoes, itâs when theyâve been let go from a job. So much of our identity is wrapped up in our careers and money, and most of us have a strong urge to contribute to our family - which, after losing a job, feels impossible. But stuff happens! Especially as a partner, itâs crucial to remember that your partner is human, too. Theyâre already feeling down on themselves and likely embarrassed. Just like two athletes on a team, you must be able to pick your teammate up when theyâve had a shitty game or donât make the basket (or you know, something similar but less sporty).Batch your adviceIâm gonna go out on a limb and say that most women reading this have been accused of nagging. Guilty as charged! But Iâll let you in on a brilliant piece of advice I got from a friend during this jobless period: Batch your âadviceâ into rare occasions. If you find a job posting that seems amazing and want your S.O. to che ck it out, simply save the link on your phone. Resist texting them every single job you come across. Even though it might not feel like nagging to you, it likely does to them (and it is). And you know what, theyâre likely already looking at that same job - so youâre overkill at this point.Instead, once a week, send an email to your loved one with jobs people have sent you or any leads you might personally have. Then, do your best to let them decide which jobs they apply to (imagine that!).Same with talking about it. Learn from my mistake and DO NOT ask for an update every single night over dinner. Reminder: Youâre not their mom, youâre their partner. Not only is that more nagging overkill, but itâs also bad for your relationship. Your S.O. is an adult, and likely pretty capable - theyâll find something. Let them tell you when theyâve applied to a gig (if they want!), and continue talking about other things that you did before the loss.Treat themYes, you read that rig ht!Instead of being resentful and reminding your S.O. that they arenât contributing financially, cut them some slack. Think about how youâd want to be treated. Even when bills are tight (been there!), think of a way to treat your significant other and raise their spirits.Maybe itâs a massage (by you OR a trained professional), a beer at the local brewery, or even a little picnic in the park. Donât spend money if you donât have it, but get creative in showing your partner that youâre there for them. Job or no job, they still (likely) deserve a little love. It might be the supportive boost they needed right before a big interview, too!Plan around your budgetIf youâll be the bread winner, or if neither of you will be working, itâs obviously important to budget. Even if your S.O. gets a job again soon, youâll have a few weeks/months of limited income. Take that income, plus any crucial bills, and do some math - together - so that youâre both on the same page.Since you donât know how long this strict budget will last, save money on weekly bills like grocery shopping, and think about cutting costs like Netflix and your gym membership. You might even realize that you donât need a lot of the auto-pilot services youâd been paying for - even after a job is found! If money is really tight, as it was for us with the wedding approaching, consider moving back in with a set of parents for the time being. We did it (and survived!). Our San Francisco rent was something we didnât want to be stressing about, especially if it took a while to find a job. So, we packed up and moved in with my parents for a few months. If you have this option, or can bring in a roommate to help cover costs, itâs one way to reduce major budget stress.Give it timeFinding a job that suits someone well usually doesnât happen overnight. Let your partner find something that makes them happy or is a good fit. I can guarantee that youâll feel disappointed after they come home from an interview saying they didnât like the role after all, but again, put yourself in their shoes. It might take a little while longer, but at the end of the day, you donât want to go through this again soon. Let them find a gig theyâll be happy at for a while - instead of forcing them into something because of your stress levels. They can always find a part-time job in the meantime if this is taking longer than youâre both comfortable with. This article first appeared on The EveryGirl.

Legalities of Wearing Military Uniforms on Halloween
Legalities of Wearing Military Uniforms on Halloween Legalities of Wearing Military Uniforms on Halloween Can a civilian child or adult wear the military uniform legally? Even if for a one time event like Halloween or a costume party? Each year, small children (and some not-so-small children) dress up in costumes. Some of these folks, both small and tall will be wearing replicas of United States Military Uniforms. Is that legal? Can you dress up your little Rambo to look like a United States Army Officer? What about your big Rambo? What about impersonating someone in the military? This is typically where the line is drawn. In fact the Stolen Valor Act of 2013 addresses the worst offenders of this dilemma: The Stolen Valor Act of 2013 makes it illegal to impersonate a member of the military for any form of material personal gain, such as money or housing. Under U.S. federal law, it is a crime to falsely claim certain military honors. Federal laws concerning the wear of the United States Military uniforms by people not on active duty are published in the United States Code (USC). Specifically, 10 USC, Subtitle A, Part II, Chapter 45, Sections 771 and 772. Except as otherwise provided by law, no person except a member of the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps, as the case may be, may wear - (1) the uniform, or a distinctive part of the uniform, of the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps; or (2) a uniform any part of which is similar to a distinctive part of the uniform of the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps Section 772 lists some exceptions mainly concerning Veterans and Reservists: (a) A member of the Army National Guard or the Air National Guard may wear the uniform prescribed for the Army National Guard or the Air National Guard, as the case may be. (b) A member of the Naval Militia may wear the uniform prescribed for the Naval Militia. (c) A retired officer of the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps may bear the title and wear the uniform of his retired grade. (d) A person who is discharged honorably or under honorable conditions from the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps may wear his uniform while going from the place of discharge to his home, within three months after his discharge. (e) A person not on active duty who served honorably in time of war in the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps may bear the title, and, when authorized by regulations prescribed by the President, wear the uniform, of the highest grade held by him during that war. (f) While portraying a member of the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps, an actor in a theatrical or motion-picture production may wear the uniform of that armed force if the portrayal does not tend to discredit that armed force. (g) An officer or resident of a veterans home administered by the Department of Veterans Affairs may wear such uniform as the Secretary of the military department concerned may prescribe. (h) While attending a course of military instruction conducted by the Army, Navy, Air Force, or Marine Corps, a civilian may wear the uniform prescribed by that armed force if the wear of such uniform is specifically authorized under regulations prescribed by the Secretary of the military department concerned. Seems pretty clear, none of the above categories cover Halloween. Or, do they? Section 772 (f) allows the uniform to be worn in a theatrical production. Is Trick or Treat a theatrical production? Nobody knows, because no court has ever defined this. The closest a court has come is the Supreme Court, who used a very liberal interpretation of theatrical production in SCHACHT v. UNITED STATES, 398 U.S. 58 (1970). In a nutshell, in the Supreme Court case, the court defined theatrical production very liberally, and struck out as unconstitutional the prohibition that the portrayal not intend to discredit the military. Against The Law to Wear the Uniform as a Civilian? Separate from technical legality is whether or not it really matters. Under our legal system, district attorneys have are given a wide latitude of what law violations to prosecute and which ones to ignore. However, the Army cares if civilians wear the uniform or parts of the uniform, and might be willing to persuade a DA to prosecute. Some of the services have gone out of their way to include restrictions in their dress and appearance regulations (which are not enforceable against civilians, but tends to show that services view on the subject). Army Regulation 670-1, a. The following uniform items are distinctive and will not be sold to or worn by unauthorized personnel: (1) All Army headgear, when worn with insignia. (2) Badges and tabs (identification, marksmanship, combat, and special skill). (3) Uniform buttons (U.S. Army or Corps of Engineers). (4) Decorations, service medals, service and training ribbons, and other awards and their appurtenances. (5) Insignia of any design or color that the Army has adopted. This indicates that the Army would not be very happy if they learned that a civilian was wearing one of the items listed above. So, is your kid (big or small) going to be arrested and sent to jail for wearing a military uniform on Halloween? That the answer would be no.

Predictive Algorithms Offer New Hope to Diabetics
Predictive Algorithms Offer New Hope to Diabetics Predictive Algorithms Offer New Hope to Diabetics Predictive Algorithms Offer New Hope to Diabetics Help may soon be on the way for the 1.25 million Americans dealing with Type 1 diabetes. Using a predictive algorithm together with a mechanical insulin pump, researchers are successfully testing a new artificial pancreas that automates the routine of measuring blood sugar, calculating insulin doses, and injecting insulin that diabetics must do throughout the day. The device, developed at the University of Virginias School of Medicines Center for Diabetes Technology, is now undergoing clinical testing. Because the devices predictive software had been used in hospital settings previously, the U.S. Food Drug Administration permitted the researchers to skip to human trials without large animal testing based on computer simulation evidence. The human pancreas produces hormones, such as insulin and glucagon, to regulate the amount of glucose, a sugar, in the bloodstream. Ordinarily, it senses various biochemicals produced by the active or resting body to determine just how much of those hormones to produce. In diabetes, this feedback system breaks down. An artificial pancreas works much the same way. While it is not a replacement organ, it does use closed-loop controls to monitor glucose levels under the skin and automatically inject insulin when needed. This allows diabetics to live more normal and more active lives, and even participate in sports. The National Institutes of Health has funded four artificial pancreas clinical trials to gather data for FDA approval. Most of these systems are small and automated and they communicate wirelessly. You May Like: Antibacterial Copper to Heal Bones They also differ in some ways. One, developed by Boston University biomedical engineer Edward Damiano and Harvard Medical School endocrinologist Steven Russell, dispenses both insulin and glucagon. Another, the FDA-approved Medtronic MiniMed 670G, is especially attuned to glucose fluctuations at mealtime though it still requires patients to take a dose of fast-acting insulin when they eat. Controller Inside of Insulin Pump In many ways, Control-IQ, developed by University of Virginia School of Medicines Center for Diabetes Technology operates along similar lines. It puts the controller inside the insulin pump and takes a blood glucose reading every five minutes. The control algorithm calculates the dosage and the pump injects a micro amount of insulin to keep glucose levels steady. Like other systems, its big breakthrough is a control algorithm that predicts rather than reacts to changes in blood sugar. This is crucial, since it takes an hour for subcutaneous insulin injections to take effect. We now have learned how to predict blood sugar levels and inject insulin [based] on predictive values as opposed to the current readings, Boris Kovatchev, the centers director, said. The predictive model is based on a simulation that Kovatchev and his team developed to understand the behavior of the human insulin system. Most of todays closed-loop systems, he said, use the computer simulation environment we introduced back in 2008 to refine their systems. Recommended for You: Breakthrough Could Bring New Cancer Treatment In 2008, Kovatchev and his team began testing a system that combined a control algorithm based on the simulation model with continuous glucose monitoring and an automated insulin pump on hospital patients. This enabled health professionals to monitor patients closely and ensure the algorithm and model worked safely. That same year, FDA gave the team the green light to test artificial pancreas algorithms on simulation models rather than on dogs and pigs, the usual animal models for diabetes. That was a big deal at the time, because we basically eliminated the animal trials from the field and accelerated the development, probably by years, Kovatchev said. Work on Pancreas Began Seven Years Ago In 2012, the researchers released their first portable system, called DiAs. It had four wirelessly linked components: a continuous glucose monitor, a receiver, a smartphone-based control algorithm, and an insulin pump. Three years later, they introduced inControl, which eliminated the receiver. The researchers developed the system with TypeZero Technologies, whose founders included Kovatchev and other University of Virginia faculty. The company was acquired in 2018 by continuous glucose monitor maker Dexcom, which also worked on the project and uses a variant of the control system for its products. Kovatchevs latest iteration, introduced in 2017, eliminated the smartphone, too. Instead, Control-IQ has just two components: a Dexcom G6 continuous glucose monitoring sensor and a t:slim x2 insulin pump from Tandem Diabetes Care (seen above). The sensor, which is about an inch long, inserts a small needle (about 4 mm) under the skin. It can remain in place for about 10 days, and then must be replaced. Its an easy procedure, the users can do it themselves, Kovatchev says. Users wear the pumpits about half the size of a smartphoneon the hip. It has a touchscreen interface and a reservoir that holds three to four days worth of insulin, which is injected into the body via a small needle. It comes with a micro USB cable for recharging the battery. Unique Properties of Algorithm Three features make Control-IQs algorithm unique, Kovatchev said. First, it gradually increases insulin dosages overnight so that the user wakes up with glucose levels of around 100120 mg/dL. This is a very big deal, he said. If you start your day well-rested, with a normal blood glucose levelthats a very different day for people with diabetes. Second, the system automatically administers an insulin bolus, a dose of fast-acting insulin, which diabetics take before meals to moderate blood glucose changes after eating. For a variety of regulatory reasons, most systems out there are not allowedor not yet designedto do automated insulin boluses, Kovatchev said. Third, Control-IQ provides a dedicated safety system that prevents insulin overdose, which can cause hypoglycemia and potentially lead to unconsciousness, coma, or death. The safety system has veto power on any insulin delivery, Kovatchev explained. Many controllers take similar approaches to achieving the same goal, Daniel Finan, a research director at the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation who specializes in the artificial pancreas, said. Other controllers out there do similar things, but maybe in a different way, he said. It might be the case that the Control-IQ algorithm simply controls glucose a little bit more tightly than some of the other systems that are in development. There may be room for several different systems, based on user need, preference, and lifestyle. Some users may choose to set a lower glucose level, while others may want to ride a little bit high because theyre very scared of hypoglycemia, he said. Thats a user preference thing that I think that needs to be addressed a little bit more in future products, he said. Control-IQ has finished the final of three clinical trials that have taken place in multiple research sites and countries to generate safety and efficacy data. Tandem, which makes the pump, will then submit it to the FDA for approval. From everyones best guess, we are expecting Control-IQ to be FDA-approved sometime between July and December, Finan said. When the FDA approves it for distribution, people who have this type of insulin pump will just get wireless software upgrades, Kovatchev says. They dont need to change the pump. Its like an upgrade to your phone. Jen Pinkowski is an independent writer. Recommended for you: Antibacterial Copper to Heal Bones

The #1 culture problem in organizations A lack of authenticity
The #1 culture problem in organizations A lack of authenticity The #1 culture problem in organizations A lack of authenticity Of all the underlying reasons that drama creeps into our workplaces and ruins corporate culture, a lack of authenticity is the most serious. We know the drill: Have a policy for everything, make employees sign acknowledgments for all those policies, draft a statement about your companyâs âcommitment to diversity and inclusionâ and post it on your company website. Defend every claim of unfairness with your standard statement that your company is âcommitted to an environment free of harassmentâ and that you are an âequal opportunity employer.â Iâm not necessarily saying any of these are bad, Iâm saying they are rote responses that send a clear message: âWe are an average company who implements average solutions.âFollow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! And whatâs worse is a company that says these things but means none of them.I liken a companyâs promise of a âharassment-freeâ workplace to a restaurant that promises diners âpoison-freeâ meals. I suppose a restaurant wants to make sure that diners know they wonât get food poisoning when they visit, but isnât a better marketing strategy to promise them an excellent dining experience?Similarly, promising a harassment-free workplace tells employees: âWe promise to do the minimumâ or âWe promise to do what the law requires.â A more effective approach is to promise a healthy and inclusive workplace culture. That necessarily means that the culture wonât tolerate harassment, and it also means that employees will be respected, developed, and provided with opportunities to thrive.Hereâs a common scenario:Company: We have a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to sexual harassment. Employee: My boss tells sexually suggestive jokes and makes sexually charged comments and at the last sales conference he invited me up to his hotel room. (Employeeâs inner-dialogue: This is har d to do, but I want this to stop, and Iâm going to believe the companyâs stated commitment to keep me safe.) Manager: Well, was he drunk? (Managerâs inner-dialogue: I have so much work to do, this is the last thing I want to deal with. And besides, this employee is complaining about a guy who brings a lot of money to the company.) Employee: I donât know? (Employeeâs inner-dialogue: Is this person serious? What happened to zero tolerance?) Manager: Were you drunk? (Inner-dialogue: I mean, itâs a fair question.) Employee: No. (Inner-dialogue: Well, I guess I know where this is going . . .) Manager: Okay, weâll look into it, but Iâm sure he was joking. (Inner- dialogue: I better not find that any of this is true . . . I canât lose this guy.) Employee: Um, okay. Thanks, I guess. (Inner-dialogue: I should have listened to my coworker who told me to keep my mouth shut.)How do you create and maintain a culture that says what it means and means what it says? Try this thre e-step process: Define it. Live it. Color it in.Define it: You canât âlive your valuesâ until youâve defined what those values are. This involves more than putting a mission statement on your website. What does your company really stand for? Why do employees and leaders join and stay with your company? If your companyâs focus is on increasing revenue (for example, a start-up that will perish without showing profit quickly), then donât pretend to be a company that wants to retain employees for a lifetime. If you are a company whose passion is making the world a better place, say so and structure your culture to attract employees who buy into that philosophy. More than ever, culture matters to employees, often even more than compensation.Live it: So now that youâve found your companyâs true north, how do you make it real? First and foremost, walk the walk. Be radically authentic. All work on defining your culture will go to waste if your employees sense that it is simp ly lip service. If youâve defined integrity as a core company value, then act in all instances of ethical lapses. All of them. If you say you believe in and value diversity and inclusion, then be a champion for a comprehensively and creatively designed and deployed DI plan.Color it in: Simply defining and living your values isnât quite enough. Be meticulous about linking your company culture to your companyâs purpose and passion. And do so in detail. Will you draft and distribute an employee handbook (yawn) or an inspirational guide that gives employees genuine guidelines about what to expect, and also tells them what is expected of them? Will you talk about your values during interviews, at performance meetings, during coaching sessions and even when an employee is exiting your company? If not, why not? Once youâve made your company purpose clear, itâs time to yell that message from the rooftops every chance you get.Practicing profound authenticity is the first step on th e path to a drama-free workplace.Excerpted with permission from the publisher, Wiley, from The Drama Free Workplace: How You Can Prevent Unconscious Bias, Sexual Harassment, Ethics Lapses, and Inspire a Healthy Culture by Patti Perez. How to prepare to fall back when Daylight Saving Time ends
How to prepare to fall back when Daylight Saving Time ends How to prepare to fall back when Daylight Saving Time ends On the first Sunday of November, our clocks will move back an hour at 2 a.m., and we will gain an hour of sleep as we âfall backâ as Daylight Saving Time officially ends. But that extra hour of rest will come at a cost to our routines.Soon, you will be ending your work day in darkness as the switch pushes sunset forward an hour, too. For those of us who live in cooler climates, the end of Daylight Saving Time heralds the time of sweater weather, chilly winds, and the days when the lines of Louise Glückâs moody âOctoberâ poem make the most sense: âThis is the light of autumn; it has turned on us. Surely it is a privilege to approach the end still believing in something.âHow can we prepare for this annual arbitrary switch in time so we can fall back gracefully instead of tumbling backward unaware? Here are some tips so you can start to prepare:1) Donât drink alcohol or coffee on SaturdayStimulants like alcohol and caffeine interfere with our bodyâs internal clock, whic h is already going to be thrown for a loop when your body feels like itâs afternoon when itâs morning. As a stimulant, alcohol will increase the number of times you wake up at night and research finds that it will decrease the quality of sleep youâll get.Treat the time switch like a mild form of jet lag and avoid going for an alcoholic nightcap.2) Remember to change your clocksNowadays, most of our digital clocks on our electronic devices will do the time switch for us. But for those of us who use clocks with hands spinning around a dial, remember to move your clock backward Saturday night, so you donât miss meetings and phone calls from people living in a world thatâs an hour behind you.3) Go outsideOpen up your blinds Sunday morning and welcome the brighter rays of light. The end of Daylight Saving Time pushes sunrise back an hour as winterâs morning light will reach you sooner now. The sun is natureâs regulator and keeps our internal circadian rhythms on track.Besi des working as our natural timekeeper, the sun is also a good pick-me-up as the days shorten. One study found morning light exposure to be the most effective treatment for cheering us up in the face of winter blues and seasonal affective disorder.4) Resist sleeping inYou may be tempted to enjoy the chance to snooze on Sunday, but if you want to adjust to timeâs new schedule, youâll need to adjust your personal schedule accordingly. Dr. Alon Y. Avidan, Director of UCLAâs Sleep Disorders Center recommends going to bed an hour later than you normally would on Saturday night so that you can wake up feeling like itâs morning the next day.Trust fall, donât free fall, backWith these tips, you can approach Sundayâs time shift like a trust fall instead of a free-fall: knowing that youâve prepared your body for something to catch you. This a version of a previously published article.

Six Traits that Define Wise Leadership
Six Traits that Define Wise Leadership Six Traits that Define Wise Leadership Six Traits that Define Wise Leadership Kaipa and Navi Radjou, authors of From Smart to Wise: Acting And Leading with Vision (Jossey-Bass, 2013) Smartness is like a wild horse riding it can be exhilarating for a while until one is thrown from it. To tame and harness smartness for the long run, we need wisdom the stuff that gives us ethical clarity and a sense of purpose. Below are six capabilities that smart 21st-century business leaders can use to cultivate wise leadership. Smart leaders generally fall into two broad categories: functional smart and business smart. 1. Perspective Functional smart leaderstypically focus on what can be done in the short term and tend to shy away from ideas that dont reinforce their own perspective. Business smart leaderstypically have a long-term vision and can get others to line up behind that vision. They spot opportunities and act quickly on them, sometimes ignoring critical input. Wise leaderspay attention to patterns that connect and ideas that expand their worldview. They focus on bringing out the best in others and finding a noble purpose that can be shared with their followers. 2. Action Orientation Functional smart leadersare more focused on doing things the right way than on doing what is right. They dont adapt easily to changing circumstances. Business smart leaderstend to act impulsively and make emotional decisions but do not always communicate their course corrections or reasoning to others. Wise leadersare neither excessively cautious nor risky. They use their noble purpose as a touchstone to assess which risks are worth taking, and they act appropriately without losing their authenticity. 3. Role Clarity Functional smart leadersfocus on the what and how of their role rather than the why. They also tend to stick to the same role because its in their comfort zone. Business smart leadersoften let their ego and pride get attached to their role and the perks that come with it. This can get them into trouble when they feel the end justifies the means. Wise leadershave no role confusion between what needs to get done and who is best at carrying out that role. They act as trustees or servant leaders in whatever roles they accept and dont mind allowing others to lead. 4. Decision Logic Functional smart leadersexcel at low-risk decisions that can be executed in a predictable manner. They struggle with decisions that affect the long term or the need to integrate other perspectives. Business smart leadersfavor decisions that carry high risk and high reward. They are prone to making quick decisions without always consulting others. Wise leaderstend to make intuitive decisions using both discernment and discrimination. They make decisions that take into account the larger context, personal values, and ethics. 5. Flexible Fortitude Functional smart leadersare methodical in their work and operate strictly within those limits. They will defend their decision at any cost, and its difficult for them to change directions. Business smart leadersalso demonstrate persistence, but can too easily give up if theres a better opportunity. They bounce back from setbacks, but dont always learn from their mistakes. Wise leadersstick to decisions when aligned with their noble purpose, are good at enlisting support, and revise decisions when the context shifts. They draw on collective willpower for transformational change. 6. Drivers of Motivation Functional smart leadersare motivated by operational excellence and high-quality execution. They place taking care of their families and financial security over fame or financial gains. Business smart leadersare driven by the strong desire to achieve fame and success in life. Adventurous by nature, they eschew routine projects and seek challenging initiatives instead. Wise leadersare driven to serve others. Intrinsically motivated, they can exercise great self-discipline in staying with an issue and resolving it without the need for external reward or recognition.
